Knowledge Beyond the Numbers - Confidence in Your Contractor
Ask for a Certified Professional Estimator on your construction project team
Change orders. Budget overruns. Scheduling delays. If these words sound like “business as usual” in the construction industry, the words Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) can help change your point of view.
The CPE designation is one of the most respected credentials in the estimating profession. It is also one of the most reliable indicators that the budget estimate you receive will result in a completed project that meets your expectations for quality, cost, and on-time completion.
The pitfalls of the inaccurate estimate
There’s something called a “crying list” that materializes in far too many construction projects shortly after the job is awarded and work begins. It’s the litany of “unforeseen” tasks and materials that the project suddenly requires, which nearly always add costs and time to the project.
In many instances, the list is a way to make up for shortfalls resulting from poorly calculated or deliberately “low-balled” bids. Unfortunately, another way to make up for the shortfalls is cutting corners in materials, workmanship, and schedule.

About the ASPE certification program
Certification by the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) is the highest form of professional recognition a construction estimator can achieve.
Through its certification program, ASPE recognizes the estimating proficiency and ethical awareness of the Certified Professional Estimator (CPE).
Each candidate seeking certification must meet these basic requirements:
- A minimum of five years estimating experience
- Completion of ASPE workshop on certification requirements and guidelines
- Demonstrated technical writing abilities
- Demonstrated communication skills
- Successful completion of the two certification examinations
Once recognized as a CPE, the estimator is expected to keep abreast of current trends and improved practices in the construction industry as measured through the Certification Renewal Program, which requires renewal of certification every three years.
